VERIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

A student’s Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) may be selected by the U.S. Department of Education (USDE) for a process called “verification” whereby the institution will be required to gather additional information from the student related to their application for federal student aid. Students are reminded to provide truthful and accurate information. Students who are selected for verification will be contacted by the Financial Services Office and given a verification worksheet that includes specific requirements, deadlines, and consequences of non‐compliance related to their verification group. To complete the verification and remain eligible for Financial Aid, the student must submit the verification worksheet as well as tax/income information as directed by the Financial Services Office.

Verification
Applications are selected for verification either by the USDE or by the school. UCDH must verify any application information that it has reason to believe is incorrect.

IRS Tax Return Transcript Requirements
The applicant may be required to provide an IRS Tax Transcript for the following reasons:

  • Applicant (or parent) did not use the IRS Data Retrieval Process
  • Information included on the FAFSA using the IRS Data Retrieval Process was subsequently changed
  • Married applicant and spouse filed separate tax returns
  • Parents filed separate tax returns
  • An applicant or applicant’s parent had a change in marital status after the end of the tax year
  • Applicant, parent or spouse filed an amended tax return

The following information will need to be verified using the IRS Tax Return Transcript:

  • Untaxed Income—only the following taxed income if reported on the FAFSA
  • Untaxed IRA distributions
  • Untaxed pensions

The institution reserves the right to request any additional information to satisfy the USDE verification process.
